d.c. investigators say they were shot by fellow student, tyrone hall, from glen burnie who's claiming self defense. shooting happened when the basketball players came here hours after an apparently ugly shooting at a party about two blocks workmanship between the suspect and his ex girlfriend who was also dating one of the players. >> we're led to believe she had or was having a relationship with both ellis hartridge and tyrone hall. >> reporter: the basketball coach, webb hatch, is stunned. >> we've ever had any issues with them at the time they have been in the program. i'm audrey barnes where the entrance to shaw middle school has been transferred to a memorial for slain probably brian betts. police have a valuable clue, his stolen suv has been recovered. it was recovered behind the building on 4th street and southeast. some 14-miles from betts' home in silver springs where his body was found. investigators discovered him clothed in his bedroom with a

for travelers. >> reporter: some are still trying to find alternative transportation but tickets for boats and trains are hard to come by. >> the lieutenant governor is among those who is trapped overseas and if bill bowling can't make it home by wednesday charles colegan will reside over the assembly session. volcanic ash has delayed many troops heading overseas. some are getting hotel rooms, others are staying with friends and someone are taking advantage of the uso lounge. >> instead of having to stay out in the concourses or walk the halls of the airport, we are here so they have a comfortable place to stay that they can store their bags. if they have time they can take the light rail into the harbor. >> reporter: some residents are also offering up their homes to stay in for free. update on breaking news

we've been following all afternoon. police say one woman is dead, two others injured after a shooting just outside of tennessee hospital. all three were shot by one man who then committed suicide. police say all of the women are current or former hospital employees. they have yet to release any information on the shooter. we'll have more on this story tonight on 9news now at 11:00. two rallies in our area today supporting your second amendment right to bear arms. a few hundred people attended this march at the washington monument without their guns but at a national park in virginia participants had their guns locked and loaded. here's peggy fox with more. >> i'm sure a lot of our words today will be twisted and slanted. >> reporter: right at the start a speaker barbed the media even though there was more media than gun rights advocates who were making history to legally carrying guns in a national

park. >> people exercising their second amendment right because if we don't, it will be taken woman. >> reporter: they rallied at graphically point next to national airport and across from the nation's capital little gun laws are far more strict than in virginia. even though it's legal to carry a fully loaded weapon, the organizers agreed to have the people stab their guns to their back unloaded. but the handguns were loaded. it's a sight that angered protesters. >> to do this on the anniversary of the oklahoma city bombings is disgraceful. >> the idea that they want to intimidate us. this is a man who encouraged people through bricks of windows. >> reporter: she's referring to mike vander bo who advocated of throwing bricks through the windows of democrats who advocated the health care bill. >> i've been denounced by rachel maddow and bill clinton,

the fillander in chief. >> reporter: he said the rally was evidence of weaker gun laws. >> but i've known a lot of people are law-abiding citizens who sometimes get angry, who sometimes get drunk, who sometimes make mistakes. that's when guns are bad. >> in arlington, foreign fox, 9news now. >> they chose today because it is the anniversary of the 1775 battles athletic lexington and concord that started the revolutionary war. some of the families of the students killed three years ago at virginia tech want a new federal law to close the commonwealth so-called gun show loophole. they took out this full page ad in the richmond times dispatch asking snaz jim web and mark senator to support the bill. gun rights advocates oppose the measure. the man who admitted he decapitated a fell yew virginia tech student has been sentenced to life without the possibility

of patrol. he said he killed her because she rejected his romantic advances. the commonwealth attorney said he apologized to the victim's family and the community and he's satisfied the judge imposed the maximum sentence. one of the men accused of killing the president at the student body of north carolina entered a guilty plea today. demario at water will spend the rest of his life in prison for the carjack, kidnapping and death of eve carson. prosecutors were planning to seek the death penalty but they agreed not to as part of the plea. to a consumer reports about the lexus suvs toyota was taking a closer look at. the department of transportation announced toyota will be recalling its 2010 lexington gx460 models. that adds up to about 6,000 vehicles. consumer reports issued a don't buy warning last week saying the vehicle was prone to rolling over. let's check out that evening rush hour. patranya bhoolsuwan in the traffic center. how is it it out there tonight. >> we have a brand new accident

in maryland crane highway northbound at mitchell road so some lanes maybe blocked in. a good spot to avoid out in maryland. good news on 95 going southbound that accident in maryland all lanes have reopened but still very significant delayses from 895 to route 32. so bw parkway still a good alternate tonight. moving out to 60 now. we're looking at some delays out here. this is the third. we're looking at a 25 minute commute all the way to 7100 and no incidents or accidents we're tracking out of here. just a lot of volume. finally 395 a little dark but no major problems from the 14th bridge all the way to the mixing bowl and 95 in virginia much better amounttive than its counter part in maryland. no problems to report there. let's get to topher out

there on the weather teenagerration. nice and comfortable after a chilly weekend. >> it did feel like march yesterday, and especially on saturday. now winds are dying down. here's your forecast first. if you're headed out you're going to be out late i would bring a light jacket. upper 30s in the suburbs, upper 40s downtown. not quite as chilly as it was last night or this morning. temperatures are still in the 60s. 65 at national. 64 up in gaithersburg and even 64 in manassas and even 66 up in fredrick. we will come back. we will talk about the next chance for rain and showers. not a big storm but it is coming. we'll tell you when that moves in, have your seven-day forecast, next is coming up avoiding another financial meltdown. we'll take a look at some of the lessons learned. i'm sara walsh at redskins' park where gm bruce allen had some interesting things to say about taking a quarterback in this year's draft. that story ahead.

today marks 15 years since the bombing of the alfred federal building in oklahoma city. the names of all 168 people who al-qaeda in that attack were read aloud today at et memorial moan. home security secretary janet napolitano also spoke and said the security of the oklahoma residents in the wake of the attack should serve as an example in of the entire

nation. >> the family of the 17 members of the uss cole are suing sudan. they filed papers in court last week. they are seeking $285 million in damages for pain and suffering. 33family members won a similar lawsuit three years ago but a federal law back then prohibited the judge in that case from awarding tune punitive damages but that law has since been changed s a new poll finds four out of five americans do not trust the federal government and that's one of the lowest points in 50 years. the survey by the few research center found 19% of those asked say they are basically content with the government. 22% say they can trust washington most of of the time and nearly half say government negatively effects their daily lives. what do you think? have you lost your faith in the old uncle sam or did you ever have any then again we elect these people over and over

gwen. if we're upset with the government isn't it just our own fault. send your thoughts to mail bag wusa9.com. the hey of the senate banking committee said if the reform bill working its way through congress now had been in place earlier it would have stopped the kind of activity that led to wall street's financial meltdown. senator chris dodd said the bill would also have shut down alleged activity that brought charges against goldman sachs last week. >> our bill would have prevented that kind of event from happening in my view. by not enacting our legislation, by fillibusterring it or stopping it we leave the american public vulnerable once again to the kind of shenanigan that have occurred across this country. >> all 41 republican senators signed a letter opposing that legislation. they say it would actually lead to more government bailouts with taxpayers footing the bill. still to come, turning attention to the forgetten river. we will have the details of the plan to clean up the anacostia.

rain and overcast skies kept the space shuttle discovery from coming back to earth today. mission control told astronauts they would have to spend a 15th day circling the planet and wait for better weather. clearer skies are expected over florida's kennedy space center tomorrow but if the clouds linger nasa will have to try for the backup landing site in california. tune in tomorrow morning at 4:30 a.m. for the latest on the speed limit. andrea, howard and angie are all here with the area's first local news. redskins' fans will have excitement near the torch of the nfl draft. the fourth pick in the first round but then that's it until after number 100. the big question tonight though what will they do with that key pick. sara walsh tries to find out. >> reporter: the redskins can't just give away their draft day plans and if you can't be honest, at least bruce allen

mid to upper 40s downtown and winds are finally subsiding, diminishing out of the north at about 10. they should be negligible tomorrow afternoon. temps 65 at nasha. we're looking at mid-60s as you go up to 70. low 60s for gaithersburg. now lows tonight again, plenty of 30s in the suburbs but in town and around the beltway temps in the upper 40s. 39 in buoy and 39 in gaithersburg and upper 30s for fairfax and sterling and leesburg. tomorrow morning sunny with a chilly start. 40s and 50s and winds out of the north at 10 so winds not a

factor in the morning and by afternoon very nice. mostly sunny, milder, high 65 to 70. winds light. it's going to feel great tomorrow. satellite picture radar combined. big storm out west. that's going to be the problem for our weekend. in the meantime we have a we canner storm through parts of tennessee and kentucky into alabama. this will throw our clouds away and is the culprit for showers and light rain. it's not a big storm for wednesday, for midweek. next seven days upper 50s tomorrow. snipe. there's your light rain and showers wednesday. primarily afternoon activity. we clear out nicely on thursday. back in the mid-60s. we're nice on friday in the upper 60s and here comes the storm out west. rain and showers on saturday. low 60s and for the earth day festival showers maybe thunderstorms highs around 00. lingering showers into monday highs in the mid-70s. not the greatest weekend this time around. five days is a long time. >> that's what i'm thinking. let's get to our weird news file where we have a recipe for disaster. in australia the penquins

now know the online way the member goes through is is it the city's gun law is killed off and harold until german town says o'well. it's a shame the residents in d.c. aren't truly represented but d.c. is not a state. i would have thought the best way was to change the constitution first then there could be no challenge. as for d.c. gun laws the constitution provides that even american has right to own a fire arm. i find it iic that d.c. wants rights to deny our basic right and this on the tea partyers who brought their protests to the nation's daily. vaughn says all of the passenger seems a bit misplaced. where was this concern and protest when there was so much to be concerned about and so much to protest when vice president cheney allowed them to deck tate energy policy. when we illegally invaded a policy and spent billions doing it. when they saw the horrible conditions at walter reed. when a major u.s. city was drown and so much more. now that was the time to take a stand and protest.
